Luke groaned in frustration as he closed the last book in the pile, barely adding any information to Faye's notes. After two hours, the only exclusive information he got was the name of the creator of the Blue Elephant, Chief Kosey. He was the leader of an esoteric community, much like their own. Inspired by the Eleusinian Mystery School’s use of kykeon, he took great interest in using psychedelic substances as ways to expand one’s consciousness, get in touch with spirits, and as weapons. With the assistance of his alchemist, he created the Blue Elephant, a substance so great yet so lethal that it left traces in wars over the centuries till its use was considered black magic.

Luke felt a shiver up his spine when he read that. If they were to come face to face with black magic, they would require all the information they could get their hands on and all hands on deck. They were a small community, most members unaware of the darker side of esoteric arts entirely.

How would we fare if we came up against a practitioner of black magic?

Luke rubbed a hand across his forehead, stopping at his temple and closing his eyes. He sensed movement upstairs and guessed Faye was awake now.

"Luke?" Faye's sleepy voice called out.

“Down here, Faye. I haven't left."

Faye walked downstairs, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. She looked out the window at the early evening sky.

"Good evening. "

Luke snorted out a laugh at her adorable actions.

"Good evening to you too."

"Did you find anything?"

"A little bit. Here, check this out."

Faye stood beside Luke and leaned over, her eyes scanning the page. Luke noticed her pressing into his side but did not mention it. It was probably an accident. She did not notice she was doing it.

"Well, at least we're getting somewhere. Thank you, Luke. You're amazing."

Luke shied away from the compliment.

"It's nothing."

Luke and Faye observed the contents of the notes for a few minutes.

"Where could we find out more about the Blue Elephant?”

Luke hummed thoughtfully.

"We could ask around the town. Although, I'm pretty sure the Mystic Eye has all the esoteric books in this town.”

“We could check in with Madam Lila again. Bartholomew said she used to do a lot of traveling to Egypt back in the day. There might be a possibility of her having something.”

"Do you think we are relying on her too much?” Luke questioned.

Faye thought about it, but this time, something did not feel right about running to Madam Lila.

"I'm sure she would help us. But come to think of it, it did feel like we forced it on her last time. She told us she did not want to participate in this investigation. She may still be in shock and pain after what happened to Erin. After all, they’re both psychics and knew each other."

Luke nodded in understanding.

"Alright, so what do we do now?"

Faye sighed in frustration and brushed her hair away from her face.

“Do you have that vial of the Blue Elephant with you?”

“Yes, why?”

“Maybe one of us should take it and find out.
